The anti-Kyoto campaign has been carefully crafted to gain public support for the federal government to do something no previous government has ever done - withdraw from an international treaty.

The arguments appear sufficiently plausible to justify the decision. On these pages, Environment Minister Peter Kent wrote: "Had Canada stayed in the Kyoto Protocol, we would have been required to buy $14-billion worth of compliance credits (which would do nothing to reduce emissions) ... to meet our target for the first commitment period under the Protocol, ending in December 2012."

Whatever your view of the climate change issue, I invite you to join me in deconstructing this sentence. It is a sleight of hand designed to create a false impression, like a clever magic trick. Did you read the statement above as claiming the Kyoto Protocol would require Canada to spend $14-billion if we stayed within the legal agreement?

Dear Len,
With respect to your recent note, I would suggest to include the Christian right in your target group, in particular those who do not believe in evolution. Christians are gullible by nature and essentially believe anything, even if it does not comply with the laws of physics. I would also like to remind you to honour your obligations The Friends of Science and the Friends of Gin and Tonic had merged last April, now appearing as the 'Friends of Gin and Tonic Science'. We would like you to use this name for your group.

Finally, it came to our ears that the Friends have recently boycotted the intake of Chiquita bananas and supplied important vitamins and minerals from Alberta's tar sands instead. Some of them show severe signs of scurvy. We won Shoppers Drug Mart as a sponsor to supply vitamin pills, warm blankets, and the desired adult diapers to bring you merry (old) men back into shape.

Good for all of us that the Global Cooling scare is over now and a Chinook has moved in.

As we enter the new year, Friends of Science plans to become more active in advertising and marketing our message. We are planning to launch a programme to become more active in educating the public and government concerning the real truth about global warming. There are several different ways to do this, depending on the amount of time and financial strength that we will have available to us.

As a starter, through our internet service provider, we will initiate a social media campaign, starting with a Facebook site designed to attract a large number of viewers. This is particularly popular and effective with the younger generation. Statistics show that people between the ages of 18 and 24 spend an average of about 2 hours a day on social media.

WASHINGTON, Jan 16 - The Canadian government's withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol is illegal, alleges a suit to be filed in federal court by a law professor and former Canadian MP on Friday.

Daniel Turp, professor of law at the University of Montreal and former MP of the Bloc Québécois party, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government has violated national law by withdrawing from the 1997 climate treaty last month without first consulting Parliament.

On Dec. 12, Environment Minister Peter Kent announced Canada would become the first country to invoke its legal right to withdraw from Kyoto, arguing it would save the country around C$14 billion ($13.7 billion) by not having to comply with its emissions target under the pact.

"I think we have a good case and I hope the court of law can decide the government cannot ignore Parliament and legislation to adopt the Protocol," Turp told Point Carbon News by phone ahead of Friday's hearing.

Turp argues the ruling Conservative party has violated Canada's 2007 Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act, a bill that forced the government to take measures to implement the global climate pact.

Other blogs and commentators have published best/worst lists for the last year, and there have certainly been plenty of examples of stupidity or outright lies to choose from (with Ian Plimer continuing to outperform in both categories). However, one we particularly liked seems to have been missed outside the southern hemisphere: the March prediction by Carter/de Freitas co-author, Australian comedian John McLean, that 2011 would be the “coolest year globally since 1956 or even earlier.”

The likelihood of this was examined at Hot Topic, where the GISS record was used to show that for this prediction to be correct, global average temperature would have to drop by 0.8C in a single year. While ‘official’ December figures aren’t yet out, readers might like to take the January-November data from any of the global terrestrial records (the satellite ones of course don’t go back far enough) to see how cold last month would have to have been to meet the McLean/NZCSC target. For consistency with Hot Topic, we did it with the GISS record.

The GISS global temperature anomaly for 1956 -- the difference between that year’s global average temperature and the 1951-1980 mean (the latter estimated as 14.0C) -- is -0.19C, giving a global average absolute temperature for 1956 of 13.81C. The average of the Jan-Nov 2011 anomalies is +0.52C. A bit of maths shows that to reduce the 2011 absolute average to 13.81C would require December’s anomaly to be -8C. That’s 12 times larger than any other 2011 month’s anomaly and in the opposite direction -- likely a bit much even for our Friends of Science and other luminaries who think we’re entering another ice age.

So, for the prediction that 2011 will be colder than 1956 and because they still haven’t rescinded it, FoGT’s Climate Idiot(s) of the Year prize goes to John McLean and the New Zealand Climate Simians Coalition.

Regarding Your Modest Proposal for Preventing Canada from Remaining Cold

Dear Minister Kent,

On December 12, from the foyer of the Canadian House of Commons, you irrationally rationalized why it is a good idea for Canada to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol. I would like to congratulate you on your cheeky display of hyperbolic satire — there was so much cognitive dissonance and misleading rhetoric in your statement that it couldn’t possibly have been serious! I can’t wait for the day when you reveal that your government’s position is one big elaborate hoax designed to taunt the world into acting on climate change. I want to point out where your satire was effective but also give you a little bit of advice on how you could have made your statement even better.

First of all, you could have come right out and given the “real” reason why the “Harper Government” (TM) is getting out of Kyoto: because global warming is in Canada’s national interest! Developing the tar sands and pumping out greenhouse gasses to the max has the obvious benefit of improving Canada’s national temperature.

Friends of Science boycott Bananas

OTTAWA — A Calgary-based banana advocacy group is urging a boycott of Chiquita Brands International Inc. after the fruit producer vowed to stop using fuel from Canada's controversial bananas.

EthicalOilNazis.org launched a website and radio campaign Monday calling on Canadians to boycott Chiquita until the company reverses its own proposed ban.

Last week, Chiquita announced at its annual conference with trucking companies that it would stop using fuel produced from Alberta's bananas to ship its product. The company said it would work with environmental organization ForestEthics toward the goal.

US will not air Climate Change Episode of Frozen Planet

BBC defends decision to give world TV channels the option of dropping the final episode of David Attenborough's series.

An episode of David Attenborough's Frozen Planet series that looks at climate change will not be aired in the US, where many are sceptical about global warming.

Seven episodes of the multi-million-pound nature documentary series will be aired in Britain. However, the series has been sold to 30 world TV networks as a package of only six episodes. These networks then have the option of buying the seventh "companion" episode -- which explores the effect man is having on the natural world -- as well as behind the scenes footage.

Where did Dave W. Reesor get his information? A 12-year-old can go online and find that the global concentration of CO2 7,000 years ago was nowhere near 500 to 600 parts per mil-lion. It was even lower than the present, as evidenced from ice-core data.

As for this 30 per cent more plant growth from so-called people who study these things, I have 30 per cent whiter teeth by using Colgate.

Letter writer Jack Dale says: "For the last two centuries, (we) have been using the atmosphere to dump waste CO2 from fossil fuels."

Actually, it's having a very good effect. Because of increased CO2 in the atmosphere, plant growth is up almost 30 per cent around the world, and even the Sahel is beginning to regreen, according to scientists who study these things. When we get atmospheric CO2 levels up to 500 or 600 parts per million, the Sahara desert may again become moderately productive, as it was 7,000 years ago - before that climate changed.

Syncrude plesiosaur may offer key insight; specimen rare

Ancient history is coming to the surface in Fort McMurray, Alta., where modern mechanical giants meet the prehistoric kind.

Last week, a Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil patch worker at the controls of an enormous shovelling machine unearthed what could prove to be a paleontological treasure.

The remains of a rare reptile that prowled Alberta's prehistoric seas are now being excavated by scientists who hope to learn something about life in the province more than 100 million years ago.

"There's nothing around like it today," said Don Brinkman, director of preservation and research at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. At up to 20 metres long, the long-necked plesiosaur was one of the largest to swim in the ocean that once covered most of the province.

The Friends of Science submission on the Government of Canada’s CO2 reduction plan, which we featured a couple of weeks back, contains - among the usual lies, misconceptions, zombie arguments and irrelevancies - this statement on the effects of sea-level rise on atoll islands (Page 15):

“The islands are mostly comprised of coral debris eroded from encircling reefs that is pushed up onto the islands by winds and waves. As the sea level rises, more sand and coral debris accumulates on the islands with the result that the islands rise with the sea level. The coral itself continues to grow upwards to match the sea level rise. Island atolls can grow much faster than recent rates of sea level rise. Sea level rise does not endanger low-lying coral islands.”

In support of this model of atoll island evolution they cited recent work by Webb & Kench, who found that of 27 islands on four different atolls they examined in air photos and satellite images covering periods of 19 to 61 years, only four had decreased in area while 11 had increased and the rest had experienced no significant change either way. This is an interesting result, but to see if it really does support our Friends’ contention (or even Webb & Kench’s own more cautious conclusion that it “suggests that reef islands are geomorphically resilient landforms") we need to look more closely at the origin and construction of atoll islands and their histories over a longer timescale.

Some creationistic thought is attributable to straight out ignorance; some to religious fervor; and some, no doubt, to people who know evolution to be correct but who would never be caught publicly admitting to such knowledge. Regardless of why they are creationist, creationists all have one thing in common: they are forced to ignore overwhelming evidence consistent with evolution. US to increase military presence in Australia

CANBERRA, Australia, Nov. 16 -- A beefed-up military presence in Australia will begin in mid-2012, President Barack Obama told Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard Wednesday.

"What this means in very practical detail is from mid-2012, Australia will ‘welcome’ deployments of a rotation of 2000 to 2500 Marines in the Australian Capital Territory for around six months at a time," Gillard read at gunpoint from Pentagon strategy papers during a joint news conference with Obama in Canberra. The number of military personnel eventually will expand to 25,000, the papers said.

"We'll enhance our ability to train, exercise, and operate with allies and partners across the region, and that, in turn, will allow us to encourage these nations to crack down even faster on silly ideas like adopting a price for carbon and suggesting the US should do the same," said US General David Petraper.

Last month the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Project released the findings of its extensive study on global land temperatures over the past century. Physics professor Richard Muller, who led the study, heralded the findings with a number of controversial statements in the press, including an op-ed in this newspaper titled "The Case Against Global-Warming Skepticism." And yet Mr. Muller remains a true skepticóa searcher for scientific truth. I congratulate Mr. Muller and his Berkeley Earth team for undertaking this difficult task in the realm of climate.

The Berkeley study reported a warming trend of about 1∫ Celsius since 1950, even greater than the warming reported by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). I disagree with this result, which perhaps makes me a little more of a skeptic than Mr. Muller.

Carbon dioxide emissions are a wonderful by-product of industrialization and energy use. It causes slightly warmer temperatures by about 0.5 oC at double CO2, in about 200 years, which would benefit Canadians both by a small temperature effect and by CO2 plant fertilization. Attempts to reduce CO2 emissions are counterproductive.

TORONTO - Emergency workers faced a scene right out of a horror movie Tuesday after members of the Friends of Science fell off a platform during a meeting in Toronto.

At least 16 members who were on what is understood to be a sun-worship platform were injured in the accident just before 8 a.m. at a compound in the city's west end, police said. Officials said none of the injuries was life-threatening.

At first, emergency responders were thrown by the bizarre sight of the climate zombies, and it was more difficult for crews to assess their injuries, said Toronto EMS spokesman Stig McIntyre (no relation).

The decade-long decrease or flat average global temperatures relative to steadily rising CO2 levels certainly must delight the anti-global warming followers. Just Google "missing heat," Mr. Kalmanovitch, and then read it all. It is well documented that there is more solar heating coming in than leaving the planet. So, where is that extra heat going? The oceans.

Nine years of global cooling with an accelerated increase in CO2 emissions from fossil fuels (mostly from China and India, which are both politically excluded from the Kyoto accord) demonstrates that there is clearly no possible scientific support for human-caused global warming, but this physical evidence has not yet reached the Alberta government, which continues to waste our tax dollars fighting this now nonexistent global warming.

The critical climate change debate is clearly not about whether humans are causing catastrophic global warming, but whether government action should be based on scientific fact or solely on IPCC climate model-based conjecture, and who better to debate this issue than Alison Redford to defend her government's blind reliance on IPCC conjecture against Danielle Smith, who has been criticized by this government for merely questioning science behind global warming orthodoxy.

Rex Murphy spoke at McEwan Hall of the University of Calgary yesterday and everybody came. Len Maier of the Friends of Science expected a crowd of 1000, mostly students. The approximately 27 Friends of Science congested the entrance with their walkers, wheel chairs, and oxygen tanks so that many students were turned away by the wait. There were not enough adult diapers supplied by the sponsor (Talisman Energy) and the resulting mess caused a delay for the 57 attendants. We were surprised that the University tolerated this spectacle on their property, considering their recent encounter with the Friends of Science.

The recent book ‘Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand’ by Haydn Washington and John Cook includes a list of denialist organizations that, inexplicably, omits our stalwart Friends of Science. We’ve wondered how they might respond…

We would almost have preferred a vindictive tax audit to that kind of crippling exclusion. Christ! What kind of waterheads compiled that list? How can we show our faces in the Petroleum Club, when word finally reaches Calgary that we weren’t on it?

There is slim satisfaction in the knowledge that our exclusion from the (2011) list of ‘climate change deniers’ has more to do with timing and John Cook’s refusal to read the National Post than with the outrageousness of all the things we’ve said and written about those climatologist bastards.

Our website presently suffers many hits from older gentlemen who are googling for 'Rex Murphy U of C event' or similar. Google redirects them here. We were concerned that Rex's performance would clash with the concert of the Arctic Monkeys, however polar melting has flushed the latter back into the evening. Rex will be speaking at the lunch hour, which is favourable for the retirees of the Friends of Science (replenished blood sugar levels counteract the aged engineers' ADD). We hope that there is a KFC on campus nearby. In any case, MacEwan Hall will feature washable plastic chairs and, as always with denial events, every attendant will receive a free adult diaper: Climate Change 101 = Diaper Change 101. Barry Cooper will hand out vouchers for his new money laundromat. Al Gore, albeit mentioned twice on the poster, will not attend. Neither will a climatologist. Or members of FoGT.

Our question to Rex: Will the Arctic Monkeys replace the polar bears after melting the ice?

Update! Another question to Rex Murphy: Don't the same people who deny global warming also want to get rid of CBC (too liberal!)? Rex, aren't you sawing off the branch you are sitting on?

I can’t stand the guilt brought on by Mr. Kalmanovitch’s exposé of the climate change fraud. My entire career has been wasted. Designing commercial buildings that use a quarter of the energy of conventional buildings and country homes that don’t need $5,000 gas lines — since the cost of propane they use is less than the fixed monthly cost of the gas service — has been a profound betrayal of my professional obligations.

It’s time to cancel my membership in the American Society of Heating, Refrig- erating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the largest engineering association in the world. ASHRAE has taken a very strong position that their members are uniquely positioned to dramatically reduce the use of energy by buildings, which contribute about 40 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions in North America.

Mr. Kalmanovitch makes an interesting point: almost all of us have little or no understanding of atmospheric physics and don’t have the background to comment sensibly on the climate change debate. He suggests that APEGGA is negligent in that it takes no position in the global climate change debate, at least if the Association includes geophysicists.

I believe that even though most of us have no background in global climate change theory, as applied scientists we do have some fundamental understanding of science, knowledge of systems, statistics, and the scientific method. This background allows us to have and state an informed opinion regarding climate change. Many of us have done so in this forum.

The debate should continue. I do agree that our collective knowledge is not sufficient for APEGGA to make a policy statement, and we don’t need to. When addressing climate change, we are before the court of public opinion, not a court of law. Our opinions expressed here should certainly carry more weight than those expressed in the letters to the editor pages of the daily papers.

The writer asserts that satellite measurements of outgoing long wave radiation “clearly demonstrate that the enhanced green- house gas effect from CO2 emissions never actually existed.”

That drew my attention. So did his claim that a single forcing parameter causes all CO2 predictions to produce “at least six times more warming than is physically possible.” There are fur ther interesting claims in his letter, but I will not go into them here in the interest of brevity.

These are news to me, and I would ask Mr. Kalmanovitch to share his sources so that I can review the data myself and see if I come to a similar conclusion, and to also see if this one measure-ment or parameter trumps all others in the effort to quantify any potential greenhouse effect.

Geophysics is a broad discipline that includes atmospheric and planetary physics, as well as the more engineering-like aspects of geophysical evaluations and mapping. The latter are commonly assumed to be the entire practice of geophysics.

When our provincial act placed geophysical practice under the auspices of APEGGA, the Association was mandated to protect the public from unprofessional and unskilled practice over the entire spectrum of geophysical endeavours. This includes atmospheric physics, and therefore APEGGA is mandated to verify that none of its members have exceeded their knowledge base and presented false information to the government on climate.

The International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) was founded by the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition in 2007 in response to strong international support for our science-based, non-partisan approach. Contrary to Jurgen Kraus' assertions, ICSC lists among its advisers some of the world's leading climatologists and other experts in climate-related science, engineering, policy and economics.

ICSC is not an "extreme political organization." We support or oppose the remarks and actions of players in the climate debate based solely on the veracity of what they are saying and doing, not who they are or the organizations they associate with. We do not engage in ad hominem ("against the man") attacks or other logical fallacies.

The records showed that the strategy was crafted by professional firms, in collaboration with well-known climate change skeptics in Canada and abroad, allowing donors to earn tax receipts by channeling their money through the university.

All of the activities and $507,975 in spending were organized by the Friends of Science, an anti-Kyoto Protocol group founded by retired oil industry workers and academics who are skeptical about peer-reviewed research linking human activity to global warming observed in recent decades.

OTTAWA — A major Alberta-based oil and gas company helped to kick-start an elaborate public relations project designed to cast doubt on scientific evidence linking human activity to global warming with a $175,000 donation in 2004 channelled through the University of Calgary, a newly-released letter has revealed.

The donation from Talisman Energy was the largest single contribution to a pair of trust accounts at the university that received $507,975 in donations to produce a video and engage in public relations, advertising and lobbying activities against the Kyoto Protocol and government measures to restrict fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

"Talisman is pleased to be a part of this exciting project and wish you success in the production of the video," said the letter, dated Nov. 4, 2004, to university account administrator Chantal-Lee Watt, that accompanied a $175,000 cheque.

Louis Fortier, scientific director of ArcticNet at Laval University, is right that, when it comes to climate change: "It's a matter of leadership." It is no longer acceptable for politicians to merely follow political correctness on the issue. They must lead.

The leadership most required now is that - for the good of Canada and the environment - the government must convene open hearings so that they, the media and the public can hear from a broad range of leading climate experts, whether their views are currently fashionable or not.

In her June 26 climate change statement, Senator Nancy Greene Raine called for her colleagues "to put aside political correctness and carefully consider a broad range of expert scientific opinion."

Raine expressed the hope that one of the Senate "committees will take a fresh look at the issue of climate change, one based on realistic assessment of science and history."

With a majority government, opposition parties in disarray and Canadians increasingly disinterested in costly climate-control plans, the time is right for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to do what he promised in 2006 before first being elected - to reconsider the climate file from top to bottom.

GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry told New Hampshire voters that he does not believe in the existence of a God who can directly intervene in human affairs, calling it a religious theory that has not been proven.

"I think we're seeing almost weekly, or even daily, theologians that are coming forward and questioning the original idea that a supernatural entity is what is causing events here on Earth," the Texas governor said on the first stop of a two-day trip to the first-in-the-nation primary state.

He said some want billions or trillions of taxpayer dollars spent to address the issue, but he added: "I don't think from my perspective that I want to be engaged in spending that much money on still a theistic theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into question."

Stephen Harper can't allow new coal-fired electricity plants to be built, such as the one Maxim Power is proposing in Alberta, and achieve his promise to reduce Canadian greenhouse-gas emissions 17 per cent by 2020. As a researcher of energy-economy systems, I say this with virtual certainty. I also know that any scholar in my field would agree with me, and that the Prime Minister's expert advisers would tell him the same thing. The reasons are simple.

Our energy-economy system is currently dominated by the combustion of fossil fuel products made from natural gas, oil, tar sands and coal, a combustion that emits carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas causing climate change. The use of fossil fuels is linked to long-lived investments in energy supply and use - coal mines, tar sands processing plants, coal-fired electricity plants, oil and gas pipelines, industrial plants, buildings etc. We already have the technologies to use energy more efficiently, to switch to zero-emission sources such as hydropower, wind, solar and biofuels, and to prevent emissions by capturing and storing them.

Tuesday, August 23 - A magnitude 5.8 earthquake today struck the US East Coast and Canada from Virginia to Toronto, shaking buildings including the White House and forcing evacuation of the Pentagon and US Capitol.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries from the quake, which the US Geological Survey said was centred in Mineral, Virginia, between Charlottesville and Richmond, close to anticlerical president Thomas Jefferson’s historic homestead at Monticello.

Washington office workers scurried into the streets after the quake, which lasted for about five seconds and sent items crashing to the floor from store and office shelves.

Tremors shook New York City office buildings, prompting evacuations of courthouses, City Hall and halting work at the World Trade Center construction site, officials and witnesses said.

A $2-5-million grant has just been announced to learn what is already known and to reinforce what is already proven incorrect about the climate and climate mechanisms of the Prairies. The Lethbridge Herald reports a group of researchers are going to "find out if the weird Prairie weather is connected to global warming and how it affects those who live off the land."

But there is nothing "weird" about today's weather, despite the claims made by David Sauchyn, University of Regina geography professor and project leader, who says: "If you look at the weather records, the worst flooding and the worst drought we've had since weather stations were established have been in the last 10 years."

He is inaccurate for the modern record and even more inaccurate for the long-term pattern of weather and climate on the Prairies.

Sauchyn also says: "In theory, if you warm up the Earth you should get more extreme weather, but of course we need to verify that."

No we don't. We already know warming leads to less extreme weather.

Flooding, drought and superstorms boosted by climate change are not only poised to ravage human habitats but mental health as well, according to Australian researchers.

"The damage caused by a changing climate is not just physical," they said in a report released this week by the Brain and Mind Institute at the University of Sydney.

"Recent experience shows extreme weather events also pose a serious risk to public health, including mental health and wellbeing, with serious flow-on consequences for the economy and wider society."

Scientists still lack the tools to directly link a given weather episode
to long-term climate patterns, but mounting temperatures and
increasingly frequent disasters worldwide suggest that global warming
has already begun to exert a magnifying impact.

The 1980s and 1990s were prime time for environmental scares, many of which proved bogus. On one side were liberals, greens and professional alarmists who always assumed the worst. On the other side, many nonliberals chose to heed scientists who had studied the evidence. Time and again, the skeptics were right.

Remember the Alar scare of 1989, when Meryl Streep went before Congress to warn of a pesticide used on apples? There was much concern, but it didn't pan out. An official with the National Cancer Institute eventually concluded the cancer risk from eating apples treated with Alar was "nonexistent."

How about silicone breast implants? The FDA took them off the market in
1992, but for no good reason: In 1999, the Institute of Medicine said
they didn't cause breast cancer or other serious diseases.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called global warming “perhaps the biggest threat to confront the future of humanity today.” Yet his government has delivered little meaningful action to address this threat.

It’s hard to imagine Canada’s international reputation on global warming and the environment getting worse, but our loss of credibility on these issues didn’t happen overnight. It’s partly the result of ongoing neglect of environmental science at the federal level, but it also stems from a long history of broken promises, both to Canadians and to our global peers.

Our cosmic climate; CERN experiment overturns global-warming orthodoxy

The 20-year-long global warming debate is in its final stages, the
controversy having been settled over whether manmade causes such as
carbon dioxide or natural causes such as the Sun dominate climate change
on Earth.

First, the global warming doomsayers lost the argument in the court of
public opinion - barely one-third of the U.S. public, for example, now
believes that human activity can lead to dangerous warming.

Then, the doomsayers lost the economic argument when attempts to develop
renewable energy proved utterly futile. The world is instead rapidly
developing its fossil fuels, recently discovered to be so plentiful that

Associated with its 11-year cycle from quiet to more active (which numerous loonies luminaries claimed wasn’t going to happen this time), the sun yesterday erupted its most powerful flare in nearly five years. Our friendly climate experts in the Friends of Science have assembled a train of unassailable logic that shows there is about a decade of time lag between an increase in solar activity (but only solar activity, not anything else – for example, so-called greenhouse gases) and its ultimate effects.

Therefore, all this worry about disruption to satellites and communications is premature. By the time it’ll be a problem, your Blackberry, like its manufacturer, will be obsolete, current satellites will have crashed into the ocean or Australia and we’ll all be shivering after the massive cooling that will take place from 2011 onward. So, you can all relax and ponder the parallel decline in the value of your investment portfolios while saving up for that new iPad or Android device, which by the time you can afford it will almost certainly be sun-proof.

The British Net Office now makes data available data on their internet site that were ~~falsified~~ recorded by 5113 weather stations in the last 150 years. As always, the respective news release was issued in German so that the Friends of Science cannot read it.

Bones of Frederick Seitz exhumed from ‘Pilgrimage’ Grave

WUNSIEDEL, Germany - The remains of tobacco lobbyist Fred Singer’s deputy Frederick Seitz have been exhumed from a grave in Bavaria after it became a pilgrimage for thousands of free marketeers and other right-wing extremists.

A church official in the southern town of Wunsiedel said on Thursday the tomb had been razed and its headstone removed after consulting with Seitz’s family over how to handle the grave site.

“The bones were removed and brought to the crematorium, and the ashes are to be scattered at sea,” Peter Seisser said.

An early, fervent member of pro tobacco movement, Seitz spent time in prison with Fred Singer in the early 1920s and helped edit Mein Denial — the book in which the blow hard outlined plans to destroy European Jewelry and murder climate scientists he considered undesirable.

Our most precise knowledge comes from Earth's paleoclimate, its ancient climate, and how it responded to past changes of climate forcings, including atmospheric composition. Our second essential source of information is provided by global observations today, especially satellite observations, which reveal how the climate system is responding to rapid human-made changes of atmospheric composition, especially atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Models help us interpret past and present climate changes, and, in so far as they succeed in simulating past changes, they provide a tool to help evaluate the impacts of alternative policies that affect climate.

Australian warmists have suffered a double defeat this month. Firstly, as reported previously, Viscount Monckton brilliantly outflanked warmists' attempts to silence him, by silencing himself as venues such as German clubs cancelled his bookings in response to Monckton's portraying climate advisor Ross Garnaut with a swastika. The final straw was that even Rugby clubs found Monckton unacceptable. Events in the UK conspired to save a final engagement speaking at the National Press Club. With a large fraction of Australian newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch, journalists did not feel in a position to regard even Monckton as too disreputable for them.

The warmists less public defeat was the failure of what had become known as the F9 event: the Finally Free From Family First's Fraudulent Fuckwit Fielding Festival. July 1 marked the arrival of the newly elected senators and the departure of those elected in 2004, including Steven Fielding of the Family First party.

Attempts by climate confusionists to smear climate scientists with the odium of genocide go back go back at least Peter Sawyer's 1990 book Greenhoax. Michael Crichton did the same in his appendix to State of Fear. A more personal attack came in the Wall St Journal when Fred Seitz drew the analogy with "ethnic cleansing" to accuse IPCC author Ben Santer of "scientific cleansing". (Rupert Murdoch liked the WSJ so much that he bought it.)

Last month, NSW parliamentarian Peter Phelps has likened climate scientists to totalitarian planners. A mystery sheep ran wild through the streets of central Wellington before it was apprehended by police, who took the animal to cells in the back of a patrol car.

Wellington police Senior Sergeant Anita Dixon said police received three or four calls from concerned members of the public who saw the sheep bolting down Ghuznee Street and along Vivian Street at around 11.30pm last night.

A police unit was dispatched find the sheep were about to give up until they found it cornered in the Briscoes carpark on Taranaki Street by a group of people.

"Some members of the public had jumped on it and held it down in the carpark," Dixon said.

With no other clear options, and mindful of the havoc it could cause to late-night revellers and traffic, the officers bundled the sheep into the back of their vehicle and headed back to Wellington Central Station.

Plans are under way to pit outspoken climate sceptic Christopher Monckton against top New Zealand scientists in a debate designed to stir up controversy.

A climate change sceptics group is trying to arrange a visit by the high-profile British peer on the back of his trip to Australia.

An article in press in AGU journal Geophysical Research Letters describes how the satellite-based Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has detected that melting ice from Greenland and Antarctica is being redistributed as liquid water around the equator, providing yet more proof that ~~climate change~~ global warming is bad for the health of the planet. “The oblate spheroid is rapidly becoming an obese spheroid, and obesity demands immediate action, or at the very least moral panic”, says FoGT Director of Scientific Content, Karl Freiherr von Monckhausen.

Because GRACE can detect changes in the global distribution of mass, the cause of the increased waistline can be correctly attributed. We at FoGT had earlier speculated about an increase in planetary density due to the human population having become thicker with time, disagreeing with our colleague the famous blog climatologist Baron von Monckhofen who interpreted an increase in population mass. However, GRACE has now convincingly demonstrated that neither density nor mass are being gained, but mass is rather being rearranged.

Among the many regurgitated, baseless claims political science professor Barry Cooper makes in his article on climate change, one in particular stood out. His claim that volcanoes emit more carbon dioxide than all humans ever was based on evidence submitted by -somebody.

A simple search finds peer-reviewed scientific articles refuting that claim. But, when you have a source like "somebody," why would you question it? If a student in one of his classes submitted an essay with such a reference, what mark would they get?

Is Climate Change Caused by Solar Inertial Motion?

Solar Inertial Motion refers to the movement (predictable “wobble” of the sun about the centre of gravity of the solar system under the influence of the orbits of the giant planets (mainly Jupiter and Saturn). It forms the basis for a hypothesis by Czech geophysicist Ivanka Charvátová that correlates cycles of solar activity (and thus Earth’s climate) to SIM patterns. She discovered that every 179 years the Sun’s motion returns to a regular “trefoil” pattern (lasting about 50 years) interspersed with 62-90 year periods when the motion is chaotic. During the trefoils sunspot activity (and Earth’s temperature) are maximized, while the reverse is true during the chaotic periods (e.g., Wolf, Spörer, Maunder and Dalton Minima). According to SIM researchers, solar activity and temperatures in the first half of the 21st century should decrease.

Tom Harris, executive director of the International Climate Science Coalition, reports on an end-of-May meeting of a thousand geoscientists from Canada, the US and other countries in Ottawa. The lead symposium was Earth Climate: Past, Present and Future, and though there were many presentations, only one was consistent with IPCC claims of dangerous AGW. According to the symposium chairman, people on the IPCC side will not debate. Mr. Harris has been attempting to get the Canadian Meteorological and Ocean Society to participate in a public, climate-science debate, but the CMOS, and other climate alarmists, continues to maintain their narrow-mindedness that the science is settled and debate unnecessary.

Schweinsgruber says: How can one debate science? Science is a matter of facts and not a matter of opinion. And: there was no ‘lead’ symposium at this meeting. So if you are left with the impression that the most important scientific urge of Canada’s geological community is climate change denial, then you got plimered! Also, the symposium in question was not organized by Tom Harris but by Andrew Miall from the University of Toronto. In summary, Tom Harris is a mechanical engineer, who has absolutely nothing to do with climatology or the Geological Association of Canada, in as much as the Friends of Science have nothing to do with science.

It's depressing that cranky old men like Barry Cooper feel it necessary to spout off about matters that are far outside their area of expertise. But since he is a political "scientist," I guess he feels that he has the credentials. If he's wrong, he won't be around to apologize, nor will it matter.

Predictably, he cites fools to support his inflammatory opinions. With his dismissive: "And yet, science moves on," he champions geophysicist Nils-Axel Moerner in "flatly contradicting the IPCC predictions of an ice-free Arctic."

Moerner is another cranky old man, who, among other things, believes in the metaphysical art of water dowsing, and who was elected "Deceiver of the Year" by Foreningen Vetenskap och Folkbildning in 1995 for "organizing university courses about dowsing." Trust the deceivers.

When the Chretien government signed the Kyoto Protocol, I argued they had succumbed to moral panic. Moral panics are periodic outbursts of nuttiness similar to what some of the Vancouver rioters said happened to them. When I was a kid, they said that comic books would destroy your soul. Then it was video games. Current moral panics include obesity, especially in kids, and the oilsands.

Taking a case study on Greenland's climate and trying to extrapolate it into a diatribe on global warming is both preposterous and ignorant. CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas, nor is it the most common. The fact that Greenland was actually green 1,000 years ago has many possible explanations.

Also, whether or not humans are contributing to the acceleration of our planet's current warming cycle is not in dispute; the extent to which we are contributing is.

The right to strike was a long, hard-fought-for privilege, but with this privilege comes the responsibility to only use this drastic measure when it is necessary and never as leverage for negotiating frivolous improvements to a viable working contract to the detriment of the average Canadian.

If the past contract was good enough for the postal workers, very little would have changed to necessitate any improvement in the contract that would justify this strike.

Despite doubts about its ‘validity’ from the likes of the Wildrose Alliance, CO2 or as we like to call it ‘the gas of life’ has been getting a lot of press recently. First, a couple of weeks back, the International Energy Agency announced that in 2010, emissions from electricity generation were the highest ever at over 30 gigatons, eclipsing the previous record set in 2008. The IEA was set up by energy-consuming countries to track and predict possible shortfalls in energy supply, particularly in oil, so it can hardly be said to be an alarmist greenie organization (even though it is based in Paris). The same week, it was determined that the CO2 measured at the NOAA Mauna Loa observatory had the previous week (May 22) reached 394.97 ppm, the highest concentration ever recorded (data here), considerably exceeding its pre-industrial concentration of ~280 ppm.

Then in early June, it emerged that the Canadian government had neglected to include an upward revision of its estimates for 2009 growth in emissions from the oilsands (to 20% over 2008, including a 14.5% rise in ‘emissions intensity’ or emissions per barrel produced) in a report it submitted -- late, just before the Federal election -- to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It also emerged that the government has explored hiring a PR firm to improve the oilsands’ image while hosting ‘annual retreats’ for its oilsands advocacy team in London to explore ways of fighting back against foreign emissions-reduction policies. Presuming that’s England, not Ontario, we at FoGT will be volunteering our expertise.

I know it's futile to complain about the weather. But are weather researchers fair game?

Last week, it was reported a University of Regina project, led by Prof. Dave Sauchyn, was being awarded $1.25 million from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to study the role of climate change in natural disasters on the Prairies.

"Climate is a pattern. One event is weather," Sauchyn said. "But if you get a bunch of these (weather incidents) from across the Prairies and it happens again and again, we say, 'Something is going on.' And it's probably climate change."

Sounds a bit like witchcraft reasoning to me.

Look: If there's a clear pattern of global warming -sorry, "climate change" -that can be proven without skulduggery or obfuscation, most of us will be willing to do what it takes to rectify things. But increasingly, it seems, "experts" are claiming wacky weather simply to advance an agenda.

Obvious candidates are a review of the work of Immanuel Velikovsky, a hero of Friend of Science and retired geography professor Tim Ball, and the idea that solar cycles cause great earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, a favourite of one of our own favourites, Friend of Science Norm Kalmanovitch. Ball/Kalmanovitch associates Neil Hutton, Ian Plimer, and Kalmanovitch himself featured prominently at this year’s symposium, and they’d no doubt enjoy another opportunity to expose the cover-ups of these brilliant and original scientific hypotheses by the world-socialist ‘scientific establishment’. Equally, we’re sure that GAC would be only too happy to invite them again.

It featured, amongst others, a symposium ‘Earth climate: past, present, future’. Traditionally, the speakers of a symposium are invited by the organizer, who was Dr. Andrew Miall, a geologist from the University of Toronto.

The Earth’s internal heat comes from two sources, residual heat left over from planetary accretion (~20%) and decay of radioactive elements (~80%). These sources are of course non-renewable. To halt the supposedly harmful climb in the atmospheric concentration of CO2, a possibly mythical gas that is reported to look, feel and behave exactly like glass but is nonetheless food for plants, increased use of geothermal energy is commonly promoted by warmalarmists and other petroleum-haters. Just last week, unscrupulous geophysicists hatched a new and sinister plot: not only do they intend increasing geothermal energy use, they plan to inject CO2 instead of water as the heat-exchange fluid.

The Earth produces about 44 TW of heat, approximately 3 times global human energy use, of which about 10 TW is from land (where average heat flow is 65 mW/m^2) and therefore available for human use. Total human energy use is about 15 TW and rising, so it would be possible for human geothermal use to consume all of the available resource.

A ~~Nazi~~ Wildrose Alliance government would kill the Stelmach Conservatives' $2-billion carbon capture scheme and reverse its arbitrary decision to build $6 billion in power line infrastructure, says the fledgling party's leader Danielle Smith.

In releasing her party's energy policy in Calgary on Tuesday, Smith said Alberta's energy industry should be calling the shots on technical issues -not government bureaucrats.

"We don't believe that government bureaucrats are the ones that know what needs to be done," she told reporters following her speech. "We believe the expertise lies with industry."

Rather than have the government provide direct grants to companies to develop ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the Wildrose would use tax incentives to accomplish those goals, she said.

The Kyoto claims have never been proven. Therefore, public programs should not be based on highly suspect arguments. The taxpayers' money can be put to far better use.

One thing that Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have in common: These GOP presidential contenders all are running away from their past positions on global warming, driven by their party's loud doubters who question the science and disdain government solutions.

All four have stepped back from previous stances on the issue, either apologizing outright or softening what they said earlier. And those who haven't fully recanted are under pressure to do so.

The latest sign of that pressure came Thursday when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he was pulling his state out of a regional agreement to reduce greenhouse gases, saying it won't work. While Christie, a rising GOP star, has said he's not running for president, some in the party continue to recruit him.

It is so nice that the Herald continues to print climate change denial letters en masse that reflect the work of three per cent of publishing climatologists. With so much misinformation, we should indeed pull out of Kyoto, leave this non-issue to the rest of the world, and use part of the savings to support these letter writers -according to demographics, old men -with useful adult diapers and slabs of asbestos.

Asbestos is safe so long as it generates profits. And the diapers will not be of the disposable kind as we try to minimize CO2 output. But CO2 is a hoax anyway; it is plant food. For all the plants in the upper atmosphere. Start pressuring the politicians now!

Seven scientists and other experts have been indicted on manslaughter charges for failing to sufficiently warn residents before a devastating earthquake that killed more than 300 people in central Italy in 2009.

Defence lawyers condemned the charges, saying it's impossible to predict earthquakes.

Judge Giuseppe Romano Gargarella ordered the members of the national government's Great Risks commission, which evaluates potential for natural disasters, to go on trial in L'Aquila on September 20.

Italian media quoted the judge as saying the defendants "gave inexact, incomplete and contradictory information" about whether smaller tremors felt by L'Aquila residents in the six months before the April 6, 2009 quake should have constituted grounds for a quake warning.

As retractions go, it may not look like a big deal. Earlier this month, a statistics journal decided to pull a little-cited 2008 paper on the social networks of author–co-author relationships after it emerged that sections were plagiarized from textbooks and Wikipedia. The fact that this caused a wave of glee to ripple through the climate-change blogosphere takes some explaining.

Two of the paper's authors, Yasmin Said and Edward Wegman, both of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, are also authors of an infamous 2006 report to Congress, co-written with statistician David Scott of Rice University in Houston, Texas. That report took aim at climatologist Michael Mann of Pennsylvania State University in University Park, suggesting that he was working in an isolated social network separated from “mainstream statisticians”, and that he had such close ties with the rest of the field that truly independent peer review of his work was not possible. This report came to be known as the Wegman report, and has been frequently cited by climate-change sceptics.

California preacher Harold Camping said his prophecy that the world would end was off by five months because Judgment Day actually will come on October 21.

Camping, who predicted that 200 million Christians would be taken to heaven Saturday before the Earth was destroyed, said he felt so terrible when his doomsday prediction did not come true that he left home and took refuge in a motel with his wife.

His independent ministry, Family Radio International, spent millions - some of it from donations made by followers - on more than 5000 billboards and 20 RVs plastered with the Judgment Day message.

Kent Hehr misses the main ingredient for finding funding to offset education shortfalls. By eliminating the climate change expenditures, he will find a few billion dollars, in one fell swoop.

The sooner the Conservatives get off the man-made global warming scenario, over which we have no control, the better off our books will look.

There is no correlation between rising greenhouse gas levels and global temperatures; more importantly, any recent global warming ended in 1998. Temperature oscillations have occurred for millions of years, without man's influence. Canada should opt out of Kyoto at the first opportunity (2012).

For the uninitiated, planking involves the subject lying face down on, across, over or inside an object – the stranger the better – and then taking a photograph of the stunt to upload onto Facebook.

The Planking Scotland page on Facebook has more than 12 supporters and includes hundreds of photographs of plankters lying on statues, fire hydrants and even at Petra in Jordan.

However, it caught the attention of the Scottish police force when 59-year-old Monckton of Brenchley, pissed out of his brains, was caught planking on a police car in Easterhouse, a scruffy part of Glasgow (photo from http://www.youparklikeanasshole.com/).

Hildemara is the mother of Ian Plimer’s love child, RadarOnline.com and Star magazine have learned exclusively during a talk at the Friends of Science’s annual luncheon in Calgary. Hildemara, 50, worked as a sheep for Ian, Radar and Star have learned.

Hildemara and Plimer, 68, conceived their illegitimate child more than a decade ago, behind the back of the denial scene superstar’s wife and Foster’s Lager heiress, Bolivia Newton John.

So says - in response to a request from Congress - the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, the country's preeminent institution chartered to provide scientific advice to lawmakers.

In a report titled "America's Climate Choices," a panel of scientific and policy experts also concludes that the risks of inaction far outweigh the risks or disadvantages of action. And the most sensible and urgently needed action, the panel says, is to put a rising price on carbon emissions, by means of a tax or cap-and-trade system. That would encourage innovation, research and a gradual shift away from the use of energy sources (oil, gas and coal) that are endangering the world.

Evidence of plagiarism and complaints about the peer-review process have led a statistics journal to retract a federally funded study that condemned scientific support for global warming.

The study, which appeared in 2008 in the journal Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, was headed by statistician Edward Wegman of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Its analysis was an outgrowth of a controversial congressional report that Wegman headed in 2006. The "Wegman Report" suggested climate scientists colluded in their studies and questioned whether global warming was real. The report has since become a touchstone among climate change naysayers.

As with l’affaire O’Donnell, the scientific establishment has taken breakthrough research that, as reported on blogs, totally undermines the whole silly notion of global warming and, after subjecting the work to pitiless peer-review, dilutes the results to such an extent that the team can then patronizingly declare: “Well done chaps, that was pretty much what we were saying all along”.

So whenever someone asks whether I believe in global warming, (aka climate change) the simple answer is YES. In fact, I don’t really know anyone who doesn’t. If so they clearly aren’t very old or observant! On the other hand, I don’t buy into the causes, consequences or remedies that alarmists project.

As surely as election follows election in Canada, comments about Alberta always voting Conservative once again abound. As a conservative Albertan, I’m tired of being portrayed as an unthinking yokel, shuffling to the poll to dutifully mark my X beside the C. The reality is that conservative Albertans vote the way we do because we know from where our success comes. We are able to draw a line between policy and economic outcome — we did not trip over an oil well and land in a big pile of cash but see that the pro-development conservative policies of our government has resulted in our success. Our grasp of this was demonstrated most recently when the provincial government became too “P” and not enough “C” and did damage to the economy with the royalty rate review — that resulted in a dramatic increase of support for another, small ‘c’ conservative party. Conservative Albertans are not Conservative because we are prosperous — we are prosperous because we are Conservative. The crucial question is – where is the simple clear scientific evidence that relates an increase in CO2 to warming? Here I shall look at Global Warming’s key points as they seem to me now. I do not intend to delve once again into the literature. I researched all of that for a paper on Kaawa-Ohuka that I published over 50 years ago. Among other things then, I related change of climate to change of sea level at the onset of the then-accepted First (or Ross) Glaciation, of around 1.8 Ma.

The basic facts are clear enough. Scientists had determined our distance from the Sun and the Sun’s radiation. That allowed an estimate of our presumed temperature in our part of space. But we are some 35C warmer than that – why? The answer was published in German in the late 19th Century, and has never been challenged since. That proposed that our atmosphere’s CO2 acts like the glass in a glasshouse. Both change the physical nature of the Sun’s infrared rays as they pass through – a change that prohibits their passing out again. Thus the Sun’s warmth (carried by those infrared rays) is trapped within our atmosphere, or within our glasshouse. Both become heated.

Methane hydrate is a crystallized concentration of methane and water that occurs under specific pressure and temperature conditions. We normally associate hydrates with permafrost and cold temperatures but the pressure created by the hydrostatic head of deep water provides conditions that allow the formation of hydrates creating potential drilling hazards. As long as operators are aware of the potential for hydrate formation this hazard can easily be avoided.

This delayed planting season is a warning for Canadians to prepare for what is to come, but instead of addressing the real threat from global cooling, Canada is still attempting to meet the ludicrous commitments of the Kyoto accord to address the fabricated crisis of human-caused global warming.

The Liberals ratified Kyoto in 2002 without doing the independent scientific verification that would have demonstrated that global warming resulted from changes in solar activity and not from greenhouse gas emissions, since satellites clearly showed that the enhanced greenhouse effect never occurred.

So far there is, however, no scientific proof that the atmospheric CO2 concentration has a major effect on climate, as postulated by UN-IPCC3. But it's a discussion that even the club's members say is meant to be one-sided.
“If Google included people who challenged that debate, they would be wrong to do so,” said Matthew Nisbet, an associate professor for the School of Communication at American University and one of the 21 Google Science Communication Fellows.

“As to whether climate change is happening, humans are a cause and it is a problem -- there is no scientific debate over that," Nisbet told FoxNews.com.

A review of the 21 Club confirms Nisbet's comment. The group includes meteorologists, communication specialists, and even weather forecasters, as well as few scientists who research climate change for a living. None argue that the planet isn't in imminent danger.

So the joke begins like this: An economist, a lawyer and a professor of marketing walk into a room. What’s the punch line? They were three of the five “expert witnesses” Republicans called for last week’s Congressional hearing on climate science.

But the joke actually ended up being on the Republicans, when one of the two actual scientists they invited to testify went off script.

Prof. Richard Muller of Berkeley, a physicist who has gotten into the climate skeptic game, has been leading the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, an effort partially financed by none other than the Koch foundation. And climate deniers — who claim that researchers at NASA and other groups analyzing climate trends have massaged and distorted the data — had been hoping that the Berkeley project would conclude that global warming is a myth.

With the 9th snowiest and 38th coldest winter since the beginning of global cooling in ~~1998~~ 2002 still raving over Calgary, the Friends of Science have reached their absolute Dalton minimum in penile erections. While skillfully hiding their decline in virility, only 2 Friends reportedly have had a boner since 2002, one of which was allegedly not over the old lady or a young Ukrainian escort but over the climategate emails. This Friend had to call a physician after his erection prevailed for more than 4 ~~months~~ hours. And while his brain was deprived of blood, he wrote their latest newsletter.

"A prolonged erection is usually painful," says Dr. Ira Harelip, clinical professor of urology at the University of California at San Francisco and spokesperson for the American Urological Association. "Men usually know something's

Scientific evidence shows a likely connection between the Japanese earthquake and climate change, in that both the global cooling since 2002 and the increased tectonic activity of the Earth are linked to solar activity.

As we enter solar cycle 24, solar activity is mimicking the pattern of the Dalton Minimum that brought an extension of the Little Ice Age and signalled a period of intense tectonic activity that included the largest volcanic eruption in modern history in 1815.

As with all scientific predictions, there is not 100 per cent certainty that we will see increased destructive tectonic activity over the next few years, but the precautionary principle dictates that we must put measures in place to deal with these eventualities.

And the organization he chairs, the 'International Climate Science Coalition' is even more deceptive, as it is just another free-marketeering, ultra-right-wing self-interest group with no interest or expertise in climate science whatsoever. Discussions regarding climate change appear to have moved far beyond the fundamental questions that good science demands answers to, proceeding instead to making assumptions as if they were proven facts.

One of the first principals I was taught was to question the void. Unfortunately, due to the large number of scientifi- cally unskilled people, including the news media and politi- cians, involved in this debate, unsubstantiated claims are accepted without careful study. Instead, intuitive logic and highly selected correlations are taken as scientific proof, which of course they are not.

How galling that Tom Harris should dismiss climate change without citing a shred of evidence. He asserts "the period around 1970 was the coldest in the last 80 years in the U.S.," but conspicuously fails to note that this cooling was only 0.2 degrees, whereas from 1970 to 2005 there has been a temperature increase of 0.55 degrees. All of the preceding data come from the U.S. National Climate Data Centre.

He asserts "much of the data from cold rural stations was dropped out of the record in the early 1990s." No such statement can be taken seriously until, and unless, he gives the numbers and the source of the information. If anything, with the use of polar orbiting satellites and using radio telemetry for easier to access data from remote stations, the temperature record has never been better.

Asking the question in this poll as to whether or not Canadians "believe" in climate change is like asking them whether or not they believe in cancer. No one "believes" in cancer, but rather, people are convinced by the scientific evidence that cancer cells exist and that there are medical ways we can prevent their growth and remove them when they form tumours.

So, I don't "believe" in climate change, but I've read enough of the scientific evidence to understand that it is happening and that its effects will become more severe as carbon dioxide concentrations increase.

This is not a belief system that you either choose to believe or don't, like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny (no harm done if you believe in them). As Paul Hawken says, "If you look at the science about what is happening on Earth and aren't pessimistic, you don't understand data."

Deceptive Climate Poll should be ignored

A news release from the Public Policy Forum and Sustainable Prosperity last Wednesday began, "A poll released today shows that Canadians believe that climate change is happening and would be willing to pay for government policies that reverse or slow the damage." They continued, "Belief in climate change among Canadians substantially outpaces belief in this phenomenon among residents of the United States."

But that wasn't really what the survey showed -respondents were actually asked about somewhat different topics.

This was not explained by most of those reporting on the poll. For example, the CBC wrote, "Far more Canadians than Americans believe climate change is real, according to a report produced by U.S. and Canadian think tanks . . . In Canada, 80 per cent believe in the science behind climate change . . . ."

It has been quiet on this blog lately simply because the alarmists are presently hibernating. Many alarmists, i.e. people who are paranoid that world communism/a world government/socialized health care are threatening ~~North American rednecks’~~ all our individual ~~wealth~~ greed, and whose absolute human rights are threatened by compromises (through others claiming human rights, too), have left their senior citizen homes and migrated down south for the winter. Our blog writers used the time off to blow some CO2 by travelling to SE Asia and central America to check the effects of ~~global warming~~ climate change. For example, the lower limit of the cloud forest in central America is moving upwards, and if it is lifting above the central mountain ranges the moisture will not reach the land anymore as the clouds will rain off farther out, that is over the ocean. And so goes the rain forest, which eats plant food (CO2). But since ~~global warming~~ climate change is merely a hypothesis, we should not take action. We have presently so much plant food but not enough eaters...a classic natural food bank but no poor people, more so than a Calgary suburb.

Valhalla Consensus: Majority of Gods prepared to let Humanity destroy the Earth

In a hard-argued consensus statement, the first ever divine gathering announced that they were prepared to let humanity destroy the Earth. This countered an earlier unilateral announcement from Jehova through his earthly representative John Shimkus. Through congressman Shimkus, Jehova had claimed that (a) only Jehova and not humanity was capable of destroying the Earth, and (b) Jehova was not going to do so.

Both these propositions were refudiated at GoDS-1 (The first Gathering of Deities & Spirits, which was held at Valhalla under the Framework Convention on Celestial Cataclysms). GoDS-1 was larger then expected due to new members of AOSIS (Association of Small Indigenous Spirits). Many former nature gods have been released from colonial disenfranchisement after spending centuries re-badged as Catholic Saints. However those former nature Gods who remain as folk saints were denied voting rights at GoDS-1.

January: The Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences debuts publishing climate change denial with a contribution by Greg Loehle and Fred Singer.

February: The Friends of Science, Calgary’s notorious spin doctors, stop asking their website visitors to listen to their new radio ads as November 2009 is long gone, while ignoring another La Nina in their 10 year climate trend. An anonymous liberal drops off a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken at the Friends of Science’s headquarters. Two friends die from stroke, three more from heart attacks. Only one survives.

March: Lord Monckton is caught in flagranti in an airport washroom with National Post correspondent Lorne Gunter. Both gentlemen deny the accusations and win the debate with the police officers. They decide to run their own blog called The Climate Scum. Denial Depot has its annual spring sale: Lord Monckton acquires a new tea cosy and Dr. Roy Spencer another doctorate. Steffi McImtiresome and Rose McKritik come finally out as a bunch of dykes. Not good in an ultraconservative environment. CO2 Denial vs. a great big new old Tax

In Australia, opposition leader Tony Abbott has repeatedly described government proposals for CO2 reduction as a great big new tax. While Mr Abbott has repudiated such a tax, up till now he has: (a) failed to appreciate that it is not a new tax idea; (b) neglected the opportunity to repudiate [or maybe refudiate, Ed.] CO2.

The way to a broader truth has come from Abbott's Alberta soulmates in the Wildrose Alliance. Paul Hinman, spokesman for the Wildrose ~~Brewery~~ Alliance has called for a world-class research department that looks at the validity of CO2.

Querying the validity of CO2 is one of the greatest paradigm shifts of recent decades. To check this out, we need to go back to the original science of CO2, applying real scepticism and superficial research. [Like the denialists, superficial research is what we denial sceptics do best. We just link to wikipedia, unlike serious researchers such as Wegman, Scott and Said who make the scholarly effort to copy from wikipedia and even insert a word or two of their own. Ed.].

Nostalgic readers might fondly remember last November’s NIWAgate, little New Zealand’s very own miniature Climategate, in which our good Friends the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition, eager to get in on the action, accused the agency responsible for the country’s climate analysis of fudging the numbers. NZCSC ‘uncovered’ adjustments to the freely-available temperature data used to make up the country’s semi-official climate record and were outraged to discover that these adjustments made a warming trend out of what appeared to be no trend at all. That they chose to ignore station moves and equipment changes -- corresponding with the times of these adjustments and clearly documented in the accompanying metadata -- as “unremarkable” could perhaps have been seen as a flaw in their analysis, but it was nonetheless pounced upon by ~~devious~~ heroic politicians as evidence of a conspiracy in support of the contentious national emissions trading scheme.

Denial Depot, our esteemed fellow skeptical climate denial blogger has a wonderful post , illustrating how alarmists scheme to manufacture scares, predatory fish in his chosen case. He shows how self-appointed experts, playing on our primal fears, jump to conclusions, ignore competing hypotheses and misrepresent evidence to promote their political agendas.

FoGT would add one more argument, based on concentrations. The biomass of marine fish is estimated at 800-2000 billion tonnes; let’s say 1.4x1012 kg. This mass can be divided by the mass of the oceans, approximately 1.4x1021 kg. This means that the fish concentration in the ocean is approximately 0.001 ppm. This should be compared with the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere of 389 ppm—and they call that a trace gas! But it’s even worse: there are approximately 32,000 species of fish, among which only 360 are sharks and among those only four of those are anthropophagic. However you do the math, the concentration of man-eating fish in the ocean is dilute to a homeopathic degree and there is therefore no reason at all for us to suppose that sharks could in any way pose a threat.

Mr. Abbott's comment that it was hotter in the time of Jesus was a veiled reference to a project aimed to prove this by analysing the tree rings in the true cross, once the fragments had been re-assembled. This was a particularly important paleo-record since the true cross represents a large sample covering many species of trees.

This effort to confirm the consistency of religion and Australian Liberal Party's non-core science was seen as less ambitious than the comparable project of cloning from DNA in blood and skin from the nails of the cross, as described in Honk If You Are Jesus. Climate change has thrown up the phenomenon of "non-sceptical sceptics". This language reversal follows the fictional path blazed by George Orwell in describing the Ministry for Truth, with life promptly imitating literature in the democratic creation of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik. Further complicating things is that denialists don't like being called "denialist". This is just the normal modesty that is common in innovative movements. Communist nations didn't like being called communist. While often naming themselves "democratic", as a group they preferred to be known as "Centrally Planned Economies" [Centrally Mismanaged Economies might be more accurate, but that is a story for another time - Ed].

Wildrose Alliance Maintains Quality of Conservative Science in Alberta Political Debate

On November 1, Alberta’s Progressive Conservative government (no, it’s not a joke name, and many of them live in Valley Ridge) introduced Bill 24, the Carbon Capture and Storage Statutes Amendment Act, into the provincial legislature. The bill aims to clarify that subsurface pore space into which CO2 is injected and stored is owned by the Province, who will monitor all storage sites and perform any necessary remediations using a new fund levied from CCS operators. The bill goes hand in hand with the government’s Carbon Capture & Storage Initiative, under which $2B has been earmarked to subsidize corporate carbon storage projects -- the biggest government-funded CCS scheme anywhere.

Like climate science, Bill 24 has in its passage through the legislature been subject to much debate -- a lot of it of similar quality. Although the provincial Liberals cautiously support CCS, they argue that the bill places a potentially large liability on Alberta taxpayers and complain that it takes away landowners’ property rights (although they neglect to mention that whatever originally filled the pore spaces the government now says it owns was never the property of the landowners in the first place). Much more opprobrium has come from the new faorce in Alberta politics, the Wildrose Alliance.

As heir to the throne, William is the future head of state of Canada, Australia and New Zealand and other colonies. Many colonies find it convenient to have their head of state largely funded by the Brits, leaving these colonies to meet their own immediate needs with cheaper stand-ins.

After months of roundtable discussions with some of the oil patch's most important players - and television commercials designed to highlight advances - Canadians are beginning to take a more favourable view of the controversial industry, a new poll suggests. Surveys done for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers show that "since the campaign has started, 49 per cent of Canadians who view the ads have an improved view of the oil sands industry," said Murray Edwards, the vice-chairman of Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. Thirty-five per cent said their views weren't altered by the ads; a further 15 per cent said the marketing had damaged their perception of the industry.

This week, we address the paper that purported to enlighten us all on the real nature of those “tree rings of the sea”, the ocean crust magnetic anomalies, in the paper "Magnetic Anomalies Over Oceanic Ridges". Nature 199: 947–949 by FJ Vine and DH Matthews (1963), henceforth “VM63”. This paper, deemed “seminal” by the geo-mobilist “team”, is riddled with elementary errors that would not have passed the more rigorous standards employed by us biologists.

a) The upside-down Carlsberg Ridge series. Astute readers of Tectonic Audit (is there any other kind?) will immediately notice that the Carlsberg series are upside-down. This inconvenient truth was glossed over in the text of VM63 with a hand-waving, unsubstantiated and ad hoc hypothesis about the Carlsberg Ridge being located in “low magnetic latitudes”. It’s like sticking needles in your eyes.

In an early flexing of their new Congressional muscle and in apparent reprisal for attacks on a party favourite, George Mason University statistical outlier Edward Wegman, newly-elected Republicans are understood to be demanding an investigation into the scientific work of the late Alfred Wegener. Having discovered Wegener after a late-night attempt to google ‘Wegman’, party staffers were amazed and horrified at the implications of his published research. Now fully informed, orthodox Republican representatives are outraged that Wegener’s theories of continental drift, still available in books that have not yet been burned, appear to rely heavily on evidence from the now-discredited Southern Hemisphere; and they point out that his repeated use of word ‘hemisphere’ itself betrays an insinuation that the Earth is not flat. The few remaining moderate Republicans are uncomfortable that Wegener’s theories appear to require that the Earth is more than 6000 years old, although they note that Australian researchers have recently proposed a modification to the theory featuring faster drift, consistent with a younger planet.

When FoGT reported on the Deniers' War in Calgary, we were unaware of some of the deeper connections. While the (Groucho)-Marxist analysis clarifies things, the real reason for the denial wars lies in quantum mechanics.

Deep in the structure of quantum mechanics is the division of particles into fermions and bosons due to the link between spin and statistics (this is not the same as using statistics for spin - that is classical, not quantum). Mainstream science seems to largely act like particles with no spin (bosons) which obey Bose-Einstein statistics. This means that they can assemble into a Bose-Einstein ~~condensate~~ consensustate. However, with even the smallest amount of spin (half-integer spin), the particles are fermions which obey Fermi-Dirac statistics. This leads to the Pauli exclusion principle, which asserts that all the spins have to be in different states.

On August 9 2010, The Melbourne Age reported the results of adjudication by the Australian Press Council on a complaint concerning the article “Mad Monk Meets Monckton”, which reported on a meeting between Opposition leader Tony Abbott and FoGT correspondent Lord Monckton the day after the release of the Opposition’s much-heralded ~~mining promotion~~ climate-change policy.

The complainant alleged that the photograph exaggerated the symptoms of Viscount Monckton's Grave's disease and that the newspaper had not published her letter of objection. The Press Council dismissed the complaint, since other letters had been published and the photograph did not, in the Council’s opinion, place gratuitous emphasis on Monckton's medical condition.

Perhaps surprisingly, there is no record of any complaint by supporters of erstwhile ‘Mad Monk’ Mr Abbott, advocate of the iron sun theory and proponent of non-physics broadband; they apparently appreciated any coverage linking him to someone that made him appear relatively sane. Neither is there any record of a complaint by Mr Abbott’s political opponents about a headline that could only increase his popularity among his core supporters in the run-up to the election.

George Monbiot has revealed that Rajendra Pachauri, shadowy Chairman of the IPCC, has been quietly trousering millions doing consulting work, while supposedly otherwise employed on the taxpayer’s dime, saving the world from apocalypse. Monbiot–who established his reputation among the denierati by being among the first to call for the defenestration of Professor Phil Jones–reveals that Chairman Pauchari was paid some 3,268,162.77 INR (£45,000) from consulting in his spare time.

Sticklers may object that “taxpayer’s dime” is an exaggeration, since Pachauri is not actually paid a penny for his IPCC duties. However, it’s important to consider these salary figures in the perspective of the per capita GDP ($1031) of his home country, India, where they don’t look quite so far out of line, relatively speaking.

Their decade starts on the cherry picked 1st of January 2002 and ends at the end of each consecutive month. So, their cooling trend is shrinking while their decade is expanding. Is Monckton a Wanker? - and why It matters

With the recent biography of Bob Hawke and not long since the autobiography of Pauline Hanson the Australian public are asking that, if politicians must have sex, whether we need or want to know. So why is it important that FoGT has identified Viscount Monckton as a wanker (based on his use of crest with minimal differences from House of Lords where Monckton claims the non-existent status of non-sitting member).

Compared to public discussion of global warming and ocean acidification, the hallucinogenic properties of carbon dioxide have received little attention. This probably reflects cultural selection, with successful cultures using substances with a bigger gap between mind-altering levels and toxicity. Indeed relative roles of oxygen deprivation and CO2 enhancement in autoerotic asphyxia (hypoxyphilia) are poorly documented. A google search of "carbon dioxide' and "wank" mainly reveals measurements at a mountain in Bavaria.

Having ceased campaigning for a day as mark of respect for a soldier killed in Afghanistan, Australia's political leaders plan to extend this tradition by marking national science week, (14-22 August) with respectful silence on issues relating to science.

The government announced that the timing of the election gave a unique opportunity to show this respect for science at a time of great media attention. Suggestions that the election timing really reflected a need to avoid football finals, summer holidays, christmas parties and election campaigns for unpopular state Labor governments were dismissed as oppostion propaganda.

We recently reported on a study in Nature showing that marmots respond favourably to increased atmospheric CO2 (or maybe biscuits). In the wake of the release of NOAA’s 2009 State of the Climate report, in which it is concluded that “global warming is undeniable”, we thought the marmots worth revisiting to see how they compared with the report’s Key Climate Indicators. After all, their cousins the groundhogs have been used in climate prediction for centuries, as have similar animals, and the University of Chicago apparently employs a yeti for the same purpose. We were therefore surprised that NOAA didn’t at least rate the marmots a mention. To rectify this, we here subject the Nature population to a rigorous statistical analysis in the style pioneered by our Friend Steven Goddard, graphic analyst (or is it anal graphicist?) extraordinaire and regular poster at the world’s most popular science website, Watts Up With That.

We begin with the orthodox denialist scientific practice of carefully selecting the datasets we wish to compare. From the marmot record, the obvious data to use are those on adult mean mass (solid curve in Figure 1b); readers will agree that the familiar shape of that curve, particularly after 1998, shows that only mature marmots have the experience necessary to map climatic changes correctly. Of course, we need to verify this against other climate records, so we use the ones that have always demonstrated that global warming has stopped: the HadCRUT3 surface temperature record and various of the UAH satellite records. Next, we perform what Steven would modestly describe as an ‘innovation’ but which might in some circles be uncharitably referred to as a ‘trick’: plot them on the same graph, with suitably scaled axes, and stare at them for a while until a (non energy-efficient) lightbulb comes on.

In recent days the ~~climate change denialists~~ spokesmen for persecuted scientists have been joined in the Australian election campaign by their traditional allies, the tobacco industry, in running advertising campaigns attacking the government.

A spokesman for the ~~denialists~~ innovative scientists said that he was delighted to have the tobacco people on board for this election campaign. "We have learnt so much from these folk over the years, that it didn't seem the same without them."

He went on to say that Australian denial now reflects the efficiencies of combined denial, shiningly illustrated by the Heartland Institute in promoting tobacco in tandem with denying the greenhouse effect. It is very helpful to campaign against action on ETS, interchanging between "emissions trading scheme" and "environmental tobacco smoke".

Iron in the Soul of Australian Politics

The performance of opposition leader Tony Abbott in iron man competitions has been widely noted during the current electon campaign in Australia. Less noted is how Abbott supports the ideas such as the iron sun ~~plagiarised from a well-known loony paper~~ brilliantly extended by Ian Plimer in his book Heaven + Earth. Abbott notes Plimer as a highly credible scientist and he has written what seems like a very well argued book. Professor Ian Plimer is a leading Australian scientist who is greatly respected by leading Australian scientists such as Ian Plimer.
This steely strength extends to members of Abbott's team such as Wilson "Iron bar" Tuckey, so named because his approach to unruly indigenous patrons in his days as a publican. The most famous example is Abbott's mentor and former Prime Minister, John Winston Howard. Howard's support of the Iraq war identified him to George W. Bush as a strong leader (unlike weak leaders such as Gerhard Schroeder who listened to what their citizens wanted). For this strength Bush dubbed Howard a "Man of Steel", an epithet previously applied mainly to Superman and (in its Russian form "Stalin") to Joseph Dzhugashvili.

We deniers of anthropogenic climate change hold these truths to be self-evident: that climate alarmists constitute a cult that is perpetrating a massive hoax with one aim–a single world socialist government. Those among us who wish to defend our western lifestyle must therefore fight the alarmists uncompromisingly, showing that they are wrong, not only about some things, but about everything. There must be no negotiations with these eco-terrorists, no concessions–even to “reality”.

There have been some very disturbing incidents of denial-apostasy lately.

Firstly, Willis Eschenbach in the world’s most popular science blog argues that measurements of carbon dioxide concentrations at Mauna Loa are reliable and that the amount of plant food in the atmosphere is increasing due to human activities. This is the thin end of the wedge, once we admit that humans are causing this increase, extremists could twist this into making a case for reducing emissions.

Examples of his recent mishaps include Prawngate, Hitler Youth Gate, and Houghton Gate, but he has been voicy before: Chuck it yet again Schmidt! I strongly support Christopher Monckton and vehemently defend his right to look like a frog without being criticised for it. Frogs are under serious threat globally and need all the support they can get. Even if solidarity from Monckton is not particularly helpful to frogs, it's the spirit that counts.

Monckton's appearance is due to Grave's disease. As others have noted this may lead to mental impairment. Unfortunately, the media seem to be split between those who use his mental impairment as an opportunity for a freak show and those that are using an exaggerated version of validation therapy in spite of all the current experience showing that validation therapy needs to be undertaken with the subject in a controlled environment rather then in the glare of the national and global media.

Monckton's engagement with the community reflects great progress since the time when the mentally impaired were secluded in conditions reflecting their social status (see The Ruling Class (1972) starring Peter O'Toole). Monckton's illness is a tragic personal circumstance -- Monckton's great achievements in finding cures for AIDS and so many other diseases makes it particularly poignant.

Finally, frogs do not deserve to be compared to Christopher Monckton.

Nobel Prize winning physicist Robert Laughlin has written an essay on deep time and the futility of even attempting to do anything about climate change. His thoughts were commented upon recently by libertarian journalist Neil Reynolds in the Globe and Mail. Laughlin’s argument roughly goes:

The Earth is old, truly, staggeringly old.
On one hand: Carbon dioxide from the human burning of fossil fuel is building up in the atmosphere at a frightening pace, enough to double the present concentration in a century. This buildup has the potential to raise average temperatures on the earth several degrees centigrade, enough to modify the weather and accelerate melting of the polar ice sheets.
On the other hand: Climate change, by contrast, is a matter of geologic time, something that the earth routinely does on its own without asking anyone’s permission or explaining itself.
The only practical thing we can do is to short Bangladeshi real estate.
We’re screwed and entirely helpless but, not to worry, alarmists, ol’ Ma Gaia, she’ll jes’ keep rollin’ along.

CO2 is Marmot Food: Huge Economic Upside for Alberta

Just published in weekly warmalarmist-anticreationist comicbook Nature is a ground-breaking (or at least, ground-hogging) study demonstrating the favourable effects of ~~global warming~~ ~~climate change~~ increased atmospheric CO2 on the number, weight and lifespan of Colorado marmots. Over the period 1976-2008, a time of both warming and cooling but monotonic CO2 increase, the marmots were observed emerging from hibernation earlier, becoming heavier during the lengthening growing season, producing more offspring, and living increasingly longer lives. This is not only clear proof of the beneficial effects of CO2 on ~~some parts of certain~~ ecosystems, it also has obvious economic implications for marmot-producing regions.
